When the summer heat hits, sometimes the last thing you want to think about is working on a cozy sweater or giant shawl. But if you want to keep your knitting/crochet mojo going throughout the warmer months, we have the perfect line up of hand dyed yarns that are not only great to work with on a hot summer day, but will also help keep you comfortable & stylish when you want to wear your knits all year long.

Meet our summer yarns

These yarns combine the cooling features of plant based fibers with the reliable characteristics wool to make pieces that are easy to care for and beginner friendly for crafters who may have never worked with plant fibers before. They are also some of my favorite yarns to dye and work with personally, so I always get a little extra excited when it's time to finally bring them back to the shop and I know they will easily become some of your favorites, too.

SUMMER SOCK & DK

Summer Sock and Summer DK are the newest yarns to join our line up this year. With a blend of superwash merino wool and viscose from bamboo, this yarn has quickly become a new favorite for me.

I absolutely love the beautiful sheen provided by the bamboo, giving every color dyed on these yarns a gorgeous glow. If you are a fan of silk yarns, but don't want to pay silk prices, this is a great option for you. The bamboo also provides a light, airy characteristic to fabric created from this yarn, making it a wonderful option for summer crafting & wearing.

The Summer line of yarns can be used in any crochet or knitting projects that require fingering or DK weight yarns, from socks to shawls and tops. The 3-ply construction also adds a lovely bounce and plushness to the finished fabric that lends itself to gorgeous stitch definition and would produce beautiful lacework

COTTON FINGERING & DK

Cotton Fingering and Cotton DK are two fan favorites every summer. We first introduced these cotton/wool blend yarns to the shop a couple of years ago, and ever since then I am asked when these yarns will be returning to the shop every summer.

And I totally get it! I have made myself several summer tees with Cotton Fingering that have become go-tos in my summer wardrobe and I look forward to working with these yarns every year because they are an absolute pleasure to knit with.

With a 50/50 blend of pima cotton and superwash merino wool, the Cotton line of yarns combines the best of both worlds: cool cotton + the memory of merino. Often people shy away from cotton yarns because they have a habit of growing over time and becoming stretching out and unwearable. With the addition of the superwash merino wool, you gain the memory of the wool so that your makes retain their shape wear after wear while still achieving a fabric that is light weight and cooler to wear when the temperatures rise.

The cotton component of this yarn does not retain the dyes we use (this is true of all plant-based yarns, which require their own specific dyes and a different dyeing technique), which results in the yarn having a lighter, matte heathered coloring that provides a "well-worn" look that I personally love.

When shown next to Merino Fingering, you can see the comparatively matte, heathered finish of Cotton Fingering and the muted color due to the high percentage of cotton in the yarn.

SILK FINGERING

Silk Fingering is available throughout the year, but I wanted to give it a shout out here, too, because it truly is the all season pro that also is a great option for your summer crafting plans.

With the addition of 20% silk, this yarn has a gorgeous sheen similar to the bamboo viscose, but unlike the bamboo, the silk holds the dye to produce a slightly more saturated color. Silk also helps provide some temperature regulation, helping you stay cooler in warmer months and warmer in the winter, making it a true chameleon that can work across seasons.

I personally love the flowing drape of the fabric created by silk blend yarns, which can help make a lighter wearing garment that stays comfortable on hot days.
